Some scholars don't believe that this is the actualplace where the Garden was as it's only 200300 metres from the city walls and they argue that Christ would have needed to be further from th city to find the eace and solitude e was seking at this time. Neverthelessm they're onl arguing about a few metres so it was certainly on the Mount o Olives and robably either here or not far away.
These tress were closely examined by Italian expertsonly a few years ago. Olive trees never really die. Intead they regeneate from within themselves. Some of these trees date from the time of the Crusades and the experts say that the core of them probably do date back to Christ's time.
Approaching the Garden as a tourist was a challenge as the place thronged with visitors and locals were trying to fight through a sea of coaches dropping off and picking up. The Garden is on the side of the Mount of Olives and our guide mentioned the cemetery nearby where some of the good and great of the state of Israel are buried.
Wondering how that crook Robert Maxwell could also be buried there, she told me that it was really only a case of finding a lot of money to pay for a plot and anyone could then be buried there. Jews regard it as about thr best place to lie as the Day of Judgement will begin nearby and they hope to be the first to rise from the dead. Of course they will then all be judged and perhaps God will not look kindly on Maxwell paying to be in pole position out of the Daily Mirror's employees' pension fund!
The Church of All Nations is also on this site.
