But as it's much further east than most of Europe, it gets light much earlier than at home and also gets dark by about 4.30pm.
Time was getting on by now and the sun was looking to set, but it was a beautiful calm end to the hours of daylight and a very serene and reflective place to be above the lakeside.
Israel certainly has what we would call mountains but what they call 'mounts' are to us more like hills. The area of the Sermon on the Mount has become known as the Mount of Beatitudes. The Beatitudes are eight blessings recounted by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew. Each is a proverb-like proclamation, without narrative.
Matthew
5:1-7:11
And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he
was set, his disciples came unto him:
And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven.
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness:
for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children
of God.
Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for
theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and
shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
It's free to enter this site and the whole area is maintained by nuns in a convent who live here |

I stood near the entrance to read the Bible account of the Sermon on the Mount to our group using our closed-circuit audio system. Another moving moment in a long day. |
