Day 7: Jerusalem and Bethlehem

With yesterday's events still swirling round in our heads, it was suddenly another day and another early start - this time from our new port stop in Ashdod - to visit Jerusalem and Bethlehem.

The journey from the port takes around an hour - normally that is - but there's little "normally" as far as traffic in and around Jerusalem is concerned. The place heaves with tourists and pilgrims and, at the same time, the city tries to be a thriving commercial centre within Israel. This is what was to be in store for us -

Jerusalem, situated between the coast and the Dead Sea, has been a place of pilgrimage and worship for Jews, Christians and Muslims since the biblical era. Its Old City has significant religious sites around the Temple Mount compound, including the Western Wall (sacred to Judaism), the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (a Christian pilgrimage site) and the Dome of the Rock (a 7th-century Islamic shrine with a gold dome)
